wow. the point is that it is illegal and very dangerous for drivers to open a door into the path of oncoming traffic, especially for cyclists. it’s one of the most deadly types of accidents. if you survive the initial impact, you are still often thrown onto the ground in the path of traffic behind you.

turn your body, & open it with your RIGHT HAND.

it forces you to look over your shoulder to see if a car, bike or pedestrian is coming, so you won’t a) damage your car or b) HURT OR KILL SOMEONE

Yep. I live near a college. I work near another college. I am also in college at night. If I had a penny for every cyclist I see doing stupid things (like darting around stopped cars, or going against the flow of traffic, or ignoring traffic signals or not using the bike lane) I’d be rich. Also? Not everyone can turn to open the car door with their opposite hand. I’ve seen far too many cyclists try to do shit like this to people who already had their leg(s) out of the car (pro tip: sometimes people with disabilities go out and do things in their vehicles) because they didn’t want to wait for that person to get out like a driver of a car is supposed to do. Please note the red light and the clear lane of traffic that the driver is seeing as they start to get out of their vehicle.

Also, as a commuter cyclist, if there’s that much room in the road (which there almost always is) and someone’s opening their door in any normal manner i.e. not trying to hit me with their door I can, and do, usually avoid it. That’s a part of two modes of transportation converging, you adapt NOT attack. Aggressive cyclists don’t make the roads any safer. It just means eventually some person that you slam the door of shifts into drive and comes after your ass.

let me counter this, as someone who has been a commuter cyclist for eight years

unless you live in a lovely bike-friendly community like portland or the bay area or st. paul/minneapolis, boulder, etc, most of these tactics don’t work. I rode for four years in los angeles with a 12 mile commute in either direction. sometimes, you can’t ride a safe distance from doors, and that was the case when I got doored. if a city does not have the infrastructure for cyclist, often that means there is little to no education on the part of the general public about how to pass a cyclist in a car, how to open doors, how to ride defensively and offensively, and so on

for example, for years, it was nearly impossible to take the lane in los angeles unless you were a super fast, super aggressive driver. in california, the vehicle code 21202 makes it totally legal for a cyclist to take the lane when it is unsafe to ride to the far right position. this does not matter to drivers, though, and I was rear-ended more times than I can count because people in cars did not care that i was trying to avoid getting doored. all they saw was that I was just a “douche” who was trying to “own the road.” no dudes, i am TRYING NOT TO DIE. this is especially the case for riders who are not as fast as I am, who are carrying more stuff than me, etc. so we stick to the right to avoid getting rear-ended, and this is exactly how I got doored. (even worse, I got doored by a PASSENGER GETTING OUT OF A CAR IN THE MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC.)

i understand that there are some fucking horrible people who ride bikes and i am not proposing that everyone should be dicks and slam doors as they go by, but y’all… these are huge metal things you are operating, and they can kill me and other folks, and they do kill cyclists all the time.

i am always wary of this sort of talk because it often ignores a huge contingent of cycling commuters, at least in places like Los Angeles or East Oakland: immigrants and poor people of color who cannot afford to take public transportation because it’s too expensive. that’s the whole reason i started biking in 2005. i had lost my job and i couldn’t afford a $4 Metro Day Pass to get around, so I would ride 17 miles from Downey to downtown Los Angeles for interviews AND my first job in the Wilshire/Western area until I could afford a monthly pass. i rode a shitty hybrid mountain bike thing that couldn’t go fast, and it was terrifying because no one respected me on the road. but what choice did i have? i couldn’t WALK 17 miles a day.

i would just prefer if talk about cyclists was a lot more nuanced than “LOL SHITTY WHITE HIPSTERS AND FIXIES” because that’s not the reality of it

I’ve gotten around Los Angeles (and I’m 99% sure that gif is from the Bunker Hill area) on every means of transportation there is - car, and various combinations of bus/bike/walking, both for over a year.

And the hierarchy of “who’s most likely to do something stupid/douchey to someone else” has almost exclusively gone cars > cyclists > pedestrians, with a little side bit of cars > buses.

Goes against the usual narrative of artists being “talented” (as opposed to “hard-working”), and threatens everybody who kind of draws and wants to draw better but just doesn’t put in the time and writes it off later as not being talented enough - and there’s lots of those on the internet, and they don’t like being told to spend their time working rather than being self-deprecating.

The idea of “natural” talent is so damaging, I don’t know why people would want to believe that. When I believed in being gifted (in art and other areas), when I struggled with something, I didn’t push myself to work through it because “oh, I don’t have the talent for this task” and stopped, therefore guaranteeing no progress would be made and fueling the fire of this belief.

And I was so miserable, believing that kinda shit, because I felt worthless without what I thought was talent. It’s really shooting yourself in the foot. Don’t do it guys. Hardwork and motivation will get you where you want to be eventually. Trust me on this one.

Sometimes. It’s not so much that it’s a one-to-one equation of “natural talent” and “good”, because you have to work if you want to be good, but if you’re lacking something, you’ll just never be good no matter how hard you work.

For example, I’ve been playing piano for close to 19 years by now. I can play pieces like Bach’s Tocatta & Fugue beautifully, and I’m pretty good at pop/rock, but jazz? I am ever so hopeless at playing jazz. I have no idea why, but I can make jazz sound completely disinteresting in a best-case scenario.

This is Seventeen Magazine’s BMI Chart. Take a moment to read it.

I am almost 18 years old. According to this BMI chart, I would be healthy between the BMI of 14.8 - 21.7.

Excuse me? Since when is a BMI of 14.8 considered healthy? Not even the smallest-boned of people should be at a BMI of 14.8 when they are 18 years old. To put that into perspective for you - I am 5 foot, 3 inches tall. To even be considered “underweight” on this BMI chart, I would need to weigh under 83 pounds. And if I weighed more than 122 pounds, I would be considered overweight.

Does that sound fucked up to anyone else, or is it just me?

With this sick and screwed-up BMI calculator, Seventeen Magazine is essentially encouraging their readers, mostly teenage girls (the population most at risk for developing an eating disorder) to maintain extremely low weights. How would you feel if you were 123 pounds and 5’3, calculated your BMI, and saw that you were overweight at a perfectly medically healthy BMI of 21.8?

I will be writing a strongly worded email to the editor of Seventeen Magazine to express my anger towards this issue as someone who has struggled with poor body image and anorexia nervosa.

Please, if you feel the way I do - indignant, furious, sick to your stomach - reblog this. Seventeen Magazine will not get away with encouraging body hatred and unhealthy weight goals.

The BMI tool was created in the 18th century by a mathematician who fudged his data, only tested it out on white men, and later retracted his worked and asked that the BMI never be used on humans! Jacques Quetelet (sp?)—look that shit up.

So let’s break down the idea that any use of the BMI can be useful. Fuck that noise. And fuck this magazine for contributing to the harm of young people.

The OP has absolutely NO RIGHT to make blanket statements that anyone else’s body is unhealthy based on BMI. Yes, promoting this as universally “healthy” is going to encourage many young women to engage in unhealthy behaviours to lose weight. But claiming that there’s a minimum healthy BMI could also encourage some young women to engage in unhealthy behaviours like binge eating or eating the kinds of food that would cause their cholesterol to skyrocket in an attempt to gain weight.

You know how I know?

When I was 17 years old, my BMI dipped to 13.9 or 13.8 for a brief time. I was eating at least 2500 calories of healthy food a day. I could run as much as I ever did, and swim a mile or more in a day for a workout. Granted, I got cold super easily, but my period didn’t stop or I didn’t feel unusually weak or tired or anything. By the time my BMI went back up above 14? I could not have felt healthier, although looking back it turns out that I did have sky-high cholesterol at the time due to my consumption of ridiculous amounts of the fattiest, most carb-laden foods I could get my hands on.

Like so many people have said before, weight is not an indication of health - but, this actually does go both ways. Some of us are just naturally skeletal with fast metabolisms. At the time, I would like to say my body was like a high-end sports car: It looked nice and performed very well, but it burned through fuel like nobody’s business.
